The Yardley Power League was the venue for our first football tournament which was organised by Matthew Swann, our consultant for the primary schools in the South Birmingham district. Matt is Birmingham born and bred yet that certainly hasn't stopped Matt from being a staunch Manchester United fan! Anyhow, let's not put the poor man down, he certainly did a fantastic job in putting on the afternoon which produced some excellent football, admirable team work and commitment, and most importantly of all, the children really enjoyed themselves!
The tournament involved eight of the local South Birmingham primary schools; Kings Heath, Billesley, Chilcote, St Ambrose Barlow, Hollywood, Chapel Fields, Bells Farm and Severne Primary. The eight teams were split into two groups and then the top two progressed to play each other in the knockout stages.
The quality of football was high and we were impressed by all the teams that took part, and for the most part the teams were very evenly matched. Eventually the tournament worked its way down to the four semi finalists; Hollywood versus Chapels Fields and Kings Heath versus Billesley.
Both matches were close encounters and despite a brave comeback from Billesley, Kings Heath Primary progressed through to the final with a 2-1 win. The second semi final was even closer with Hollywood 3-2 up with only a few seconds remaining but Chapel Fields scored with the last kick of the game to send the tie into a penalty shoot-out. No team deserves to lose on penalties, but Chapel Fields eventually came out on top and proceeded to the final to play Kings Heath.
The final was an exciting match with the final score being Kings Heath 3 Chapel Fields 0. Credit to Kings Heath as they were worthy winners; their organisation, ability and confidence was noticeable all afternoon so well done Kings Heath Primary.
We would also like to say well done to all of the participating schools and all of the players who were a credit to their parents and their school. The tournament was keenly contested and all the children were very respectful of their opponents and of the referees and their decisions. If only the premier league was played in such spirit!
Connaught Education is passionate about supporting our schools and teachers, we also look to support the community and the opportunity to organise this football tournament was one which we jumped at. We will endeavour to organise other fun sports events for the children which hopefully will be a welcome addition to your schools' curriculum and activities.
We would like to say thank you for everyone that got involved and we look forward to seeing you at the next Connaught Education sports event.
